Pirate Morality

By now you’ve read one or more stories about the increasing levels of piracy on Africa’s east coast, brought into the spotlight by the recent capture of a Saudi oil tanker. Piracy is, of course, simply a specific form of theft, a vice that like every basic vices will be with us to the end of time. Sometimes there is a fine line between state military conflict and piracy, as the case of Sir Francis Drake attests (to the English, a hero and nobleman; to the Spanish, a pirate). The problem of pira

Say They Want You Successful, but That Ain't the Case, You Livin Large, Your Skin Is Dark, They Flash a Light In Your Face*

by Eric Martin Evan Kohlmann offers some further insight into the issue of al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri's racially charged critique of President-elect Obama: Clearly, Al-Qaida is seeking to undermine the surge of popularity and enthusiasm for the Obama victory that has spread throughout the developing world, and particularly in Africa -- where Al-Qaida has strong vested interests in at least two ongoing military conflicts. There certainly are ways to accomplish this -- as was demonstrated b

Bespoke's International Snapshot (11/20/8)

Without further ado, below we highlight the absolute atrocities that are global equity market indices. The one thing to make note of in these charts is whether the country has broken below its prior bear market lows. Ones that haven't still have a chance to try and form new uptrends, while ones that have face a bottomless pit given the amount of fear that is out there. Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the UK, Mexico, Sweden, Russia, South Korea, and Spain remain above

It’s the 80s, stupid

Choose Me. DB here: In an earlier post, I proposed that film historians can’t safely assume that decades mark off meaningful periods. Yet I can’t help succumbing to the temptation myself. It happens every time I hear about how the 1970s were the last great decade in American film. We’re often told that back then, countercultural forces gave us movies of restless auteur ambition like Five Easy Pieces and Nashville and Mean Streets and Shampoo. Meanwhile, The Godfather, Jaws, American Graf

Robert Mugabe tightening grip on Zimbabwe

The U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe said Thursday that international pressure has failed to weaken Zimbabwe strongman Robert Mugabe. Western and African countries have been trying to persuade Mugabe with sanctions and isolation to follow through on a Sept. 15 power sharing agreement with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. But U.S. Ambassador James McGee said Mugabe shows no sign of following through on the agreement or buckling below pressure. "I think his grip on power may actually be stronger

Tsvangirai: Zimbabwe needs government within 2 months

Zimbabwe's main opposition leader said Thursday that he and President Robert Mugabe need to form a government within two months in order to stave off a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Morgan Tsvangirai said he fears that hunger and frustration, along with the continued dismantling of services such as schools and hospitals, could fuel unrest or violence if a legitimate government does not step in. "The possibility of chaos and the spontaneous reaction because people have nothing is very, very

Africans to stick together in climate change talks

ALGIERS, Algeria — African countries have agreed to negotiate as a bloc in talks on a new global warming treaty, a move meant to give the continent highly threatened by climate change a greater say in the future pact. In a first, delegates from Africa's 53 nations signed an "Algiers Declaration" here overnight Wednesday that seeks to ensure that the continent's voice is heard when the replacement to the Kyoto Protocol is discussed. Algerian Environment Minister Cherif Rahmani said at a meeting

Russia’s declining population

Last week, the UN Population Fund released its State of World Population 2008 report. (Individual chapters are available here. The entire report is available here (PDF).) There is a host of data in it, but I’ll point out a couple things about Russia. First, from pdf page 89, the “baby mortality Total per 1,000 live births” is 16. For comparison, for the United States that number is 6. But, in South America five countries are over 20. (Bolivia is 45.) In Africa, most countries in Eastern Af

Rain in the Middle East

It's raining in the Middle East and bloggers are taking to their keyboards to register their thoughts at the change in climate. We kick off our round up with Stilettos in the Sand from Saudi Arabia, who writes: We are in for heavy rain. It has rained quite difficult in other parts of the Sandbox, but we've gotten only a few drops and sprinkles, here. Rain is good. We look forward to it and relish it. A good rain cleanses everything and turns the trees green and lush - so much prettier than the t

“Minister of Toilets”

Yesterday, November 19, was World Toilet Day, and as New York Times reporter and blogger, Andrew Revkin, reminded his readers (at his excellent Dot World Blog) “… more than a third of the world’s human population has no sanitary place to defecate.” Many of those are in Africa. Revkin posted a short interview he had with journalist Rose George, who’s written a book on poop called “The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why it Matters.” In the interview George gives some

Love on the Moon and Other Stories

Hannibal Lecter: And how do we start to covet…we start by coveting what we look.. Personally I find this relevant, very relevant in fact in the context of beautiful women. This time when a pretty girl passed by me, in the fleeting stupor of her lingering scent, I asked the good Lord, what I could do to be with her. Pick the stars, steal the rings of Saturn, or bring down the moon…? “Dear Lord, the every knowing, seldom sharing, tell me, I beg of you, I have not reposed my faith in vain.” “I t
